While the book isn’t a tacky, salacious offering, it does not hide behind innuendo or implication. Reading about her childhood was fascinating as shows how her abandonment issues were formed. Ordinarily when reading biographies I don’t like learning about the subject’s direct ancestors as I just want to get on with the person I’m reading about, but with Marilyn there are tragic beginnings that underline the rest of her life. The book is written chronologically and begins by talking about her family history, and moves through to her death and beyond. I’d seen some movies and I thought this was as good a place as any to start. With access to an unprecedented amount of interviews and archive information Spoto gives an account of the life of Marilyn Monroe.Ĭoming into this book I was aware of Marilyn and some aspects of her life, but I’d never delved deeply into the world of Marilyn. In this tome, Donald Spoto attempts to dispel some of these fabrications while giving a portrait of the complex, conflicted icon. With all the books out there it’s difficult to know which are authentic and which are just cash grabs by the authors, hoping to make a quick buck in exchange for controversial lies. There has been much written about her and in the years since her death many conspiracy theories and rumors have crept through popular culture and her life has become something of a myth. Marilyn Monroe is probably the most iconic woman ever. What at first seems like a prison sentence comes to seem bearable and even enjoyable as Feyre spends more time with Tamlin and finds herself becoming increasingly attracted to him, in spite of all of the frightening tales that she has heard about faeries. In killing that faerie, she broke a centuries-old treaty between her people and the faeries, and when another faerie named Tamlin arrives at her family’s doorstep only days later demanding her life in exchange for that of the slain faerie, she must follow him over the wall into Prythian where according to the treaty, she is to live out the remainder of her days on his estate. Unbeknownst to her, however, that wolf was no ordinary wolf: it was one of the immortal faeries that dwells on the other side of the wall separating her mortal realm from the magical lands of Prythian. While out hunting in the woods near her family’s home, Feyre kills a wolf. But even though she lives in London for several years, there are pitfalls to never putting roots down in one place - she doesn’t have a proper career, nor a settled relationship. Laura, who uses an inheritance to travel around the world, leads the kind of life to which many of us might aspire. Indeed, following these character’s lives is a journey in itself. The pair eventually meet, but that’s not really the climax, nor purpose, of the story, which covers many issues and topics associated with “travel”, including the way in which the development of the internet and cheap personal computers made the world smaller. Laura is a drifter, who has the freedom to travel across the world wherever her Australian passport might take her Ravi is forced to flee Sri Lanka under difficult circumstances and seeks political asylum in Australia, never knowing whether he will be shipped back home against his will. These two characters are poles apart, not least the ways in which they travel the globe. The book spans 40 years and follows two characters - Australian Laura Fraser and Sri Lankan Ravi Mendis - whose tales are divided into two separate narrative threads. This is a “widescreen” novel that explores the interconnectedness of our lives brought about by the advent of the internet, cheap travel and globalisation. If books won prizes for ambition alone, Michelle de Kretser’s Questions of Travel should win every gong going. Fiction – hardcover Allen & Unwin 528 pages 2013. Three years after being kidnapped and rendered a “live specimen” in a cruel experiment to determine the cause of her deafness, fourteen year old Mary Lambert is summoned from her home in Martha’s Vineyard to the mainland to teach a younger deaf girl to communicate with sign language. Yet there is something deeply wrong with the man’s attitude, and as Mary investigates further she is pulled into a terrible discovery and grotesque new status as a “live specimen” of her people.įirst up, here’s a quick encapsulation of Set Me Free: Drawn to the mystery of why so many inhabitants are born without hearing, the man is determined to find the cause. Mary’s mother still grieves her dead son desperately, but distraction comes in the form of a young scientist that visits the island. In Mary’s own family her mother and brother, recently deceased, could hear and her father cannot. In this isolated community many people are deaf. Deaf from birth, she lives on Martha’s Vineyard (land “sold” by the Wampanoag who reside there still) in 1805 in the village of Chilmark. “If you are reading this, I suppose you want to know more about the terrible events of last year – which I almost didn’t survive – and the community where I live.” So begins Mary Lambert’s story. Here’s a quick encapsulation of the plot: If you’ve somehow missed the book, do not worry. I don’t think I’m surprising anyone when I say that one of the great middle grade hits of 2020 has been Ann Clare LeZotte’s Show Me a Sign. How many times have you wanted to transform the world and thought up some great ideas to one day implement? And how many of those ideas made their way to the light of day? If you’re anything like the rest of us, my guess is not many. What most people miss is the immediate opportunity in exchange for a grandiose vision. Our opportunity to change the world is right in front of our faces every day, but so many of us are too busy thinking about how we can change the whole world that we end up doing nothing at all instead. You cannot transform a relationship without transforming each of the individual actions. You cannot transform a sports team without transforming each of the individual players. You cannot transform a wall without transforming each individual brick. Click Here to jump right to our list of Quotes from Make Your Bed!
